TANNGRISNIR NUBIANS
ABOUT US
Tanngrisnir Nubians was founded in 2013 with the purchase of our first Nubian Doe, Lily, and buck, McQueen. We then bought Prima, then Mach, and the herd quickly multiplied as we added animals and found our "taste" in Nubians, finding the characteristics we desired in our future herd and fine-tuning to the genetics we desired most. This included selling animals we have become attached to, but remembering that we have goals as a herd and made sure the sold does and bucks went to wonderful homes. Next came building appropriate facilities, building milk stands, putting up fences. We have strived to continually improve our genetics, as well as the facilities we keep.
We chose the name Tanngrisnir to incorporate our family's Danish Viking heritage, since Tanngrisnir (with Tanngnostr) is one of the goats that pull the chariot of the Norse god, Thor.Obviously we do not worship the old Norse gods, but our family is exceptionally proud of our viking heritage, descending from the Jensen clan.
We live in a small town in New Mexico close to the Texas border, and fell in love the homesteading lifestyle. We started with chickens, then goats, then rabbits, and the rest is history. We produce meat, eggs, and milk from our livestock and keep a family garden, out of which we freeze and can food for our personal use. We also make goat milk soaps, which we sell occasionally, or give to family members, as well as for our own use. We own 14 beautiful nubians with amazing milking genetics, mainly concentrating on the genetics of the Wingwood, Jacobs Pride, and Six M Galaxy herds. We also have lineages containing a few other well-known herds, including Tamris Farm, Windsong Farm, Veteran's Ranch, Crow's Dairy, etc. With these genetics, we have lots of milk and animals that have stood the test of time.
Our goals are for hardy, highly productive animals, with conformation characteristics that will give them not only beauty but longevity. We plan to linebreed our favorite doe, Six M Galaxy Nova's Sonia Noel, a doe with tremendous capacity, exceptional production, a sturdy figure, and the ability to pass these characteristics onto her progeny. She resembled a holstein in appearance, with a beautiful, level top line, strong legs, and a formidable stance. These are all characteristics we desire in our herd, and we have collected three sons of hers to use for AI as well as our living stock, whose pedigrees are impressive in their own right.
We have expanded our genetic lines to also include our two bucks, Steel and Quizz, out of top ten does Aviva and Tatoonie from the Wingwood and Tamris Farms, respectively. We admire that these does are not only extremely milky, but they have gorgeous udders. We started showing our animals this year, and have been collecting semen from multiple animals that would blend well with our existing genetics. We hope to gain some consistency in our lines, especially after we start to blend them.
We do DHIA as feasible, and LA when it is available. We test yearly for CAE and Brucellosis. We have never had an abscess in our herd, which is a sign of CL infection, and have tested negative for Johnnes each time we have tested, although we will only do this test on new herd members, and every other year or at buyer request. We tested negative for CAE, Johnnes, and Brucellosis last in the Spring of 2020.
Thank you for visiting! You may consider an animal from our herd during this breeding season. Breeding plans are in progress...
